aimed for girls aged 12-15 – the
Mwarusis – attending the last year
of primary school and living in
vulnerable contexts in urban and
peri-urban neighborhoods in
Nampula, in northern Mozambique.
Over the course of a year, the
Mwarusis are accompanied by
leading women – the “sis” (Girl
Movers and LEAD Mentors) – who
have followed an educational path
and today are an example and a
new model of life opportunities.
BELIEVE works to ensure that
Mwarusis stay in school safely
and successfully to build a future
life plan, gaining awareness of their
potential to positively influence
their community and the world
THE IMPACT AND THE MULTIPLIER EFFECT OF INVESTING IN A GIRL
“Girl’s education is transformational, it changes the course of history. If we invest in the 72 million young girls that are not going to school and they start going to school and living according to their potential, we will have a totally different world. It’s time for us all to act.”
Maria Eitel, President and CEO of NIKE Foundation
THESE ARE OUR RESULTS
WHAT HAPPENS IN BELIEVE?
After school and while studying in 7th grade, Mwarusis attend tailor-made life skills sessions twice a week and in safe spaces in their communities, in order to strengthen ties, activate their potential and support them in the dream and the realization of a future life plan. They also receive reading support sessions, organize and participate in community events, develop projects that impact their communities and their families are accompanied. The “manas” – LEAD and Girlmovers mentors – are the reference models of the Mwarusis, accompanying them throughout the year by facilitating session learning, mentoring and family support.
What happens when we BELIEVE that transformation starts with the young Mwarusis?
BELIEVE is a real life INNOVATION LAB. Every year, we test new tools and/or methodologies to contribute to the multiplying effect of the education of a young girl. We work hard to positively impact the lifes of our Mwarusis and our dream is that our efforts, will reach the 3,3 million young girls across Mozambique. Over the past years, we have conducted several pilot projects like: real time monitoring & evaluation; income generation; game book (gamification of the decision making process); school transitioning program; LEAD – leadership & mentorship program for Mwarusis Mentors; Steps for Risk Prevention & Risk management & Adaptation of Safe Places method to Mozambique.
