CIRCLES OF MENTORSHIP & SISTERHOOD

All Girl MOVE’s programs are intertwined by this special way of seeing, doing and receiving mentorship. It’s this kind of trust and inspiration arising among teenage girls, university students and Girl MOVERS that helps to promote micro teams of Changemakers. Together, they generate a systematic change within the community. A Sisterhood of Girls with different ages, causes and talents, who elevate themselves and empower each other to make a change, first in Mozambique and, then, in the World.

ASHOKA, the biggest network of social innovators in the world, recognizes
Girl MOVE Academy Mentorship Model as a disruptive element that generates systemic change in the world.

Our founder, Alexandra Machado, who is also an Ashoka fellow, explains in this video how our sisterhood mentorship works and impacts the surrounding communities.

OUR ACADEMY

Between September 2018 and April 2019, the architect João Boto Caeiro and his team at RootStudio, in collaboration with the architect Paz Braga, worked on the design, planning and monitoring of our Academy construction, a project that involved more than 200 people. The building aims to be a symbol of women’s leadership, a reference to the world, and a centre for knowledge creation, where disruptive ideas and visions can be embraced and discussed openly. The project deeply impacted the local and extended community and Lúrio University. 85% of the building was made of brick, produced in site with traditional techniques. Students and local neighbours were invited to participate in the building process, so the knowledge was shared. The use of raw earth as a building material was very important to dignify something that normally is considered a poor material. The project had a great impact on the community, the University and even the Nampula region. The Eco-campus Girl Move Academy is already a two times nominee for Building of the Year by Arch Daily, in the category of Educational Architecture.
