International internships always leave a mark, not only on Girl Movers, but also on companies, families, impact builders, buddies and the Girl Move team.
Together, we make transformation happen. But the best word to describe this experience is Multiplication.
Throughout those 3 months, opportunities, relationships, apprenticeships, challenges, partnerships, actions and, of course, impact, all multiply themselves.
How to transform an improbable ‘fit’ into a successful learning experience?
Have we already told you that we love improbable things?
That’s right, we love it! And this year, while we were planning and distributing the Girl Movers profiles to several companies that are our partners, the match wasn’t always obvious. We were looking for solutions… and a dangerous but deliciously tempting idea crossed our mind.
We shared our idea with the company in question and we were told that the challenge would be accepted!
The improbable “marriage” was about to happen between the prestigious law society VDA and Girl Mover Patricia Tauzene.
But who is Patricia Tauzene?
Before coming to Girl Move, Patrícia was as Elementary School teacher and in her spare time she sang and played drums. When she started to come across her students’ learning difficulties and realizing that it was hard to beat the high rate of school failure, Patricia started trying other methods.
Throughout this experimentation journey, she decided to do something that might have been considered “weird” and improbable to the eyes of her fellow teachers: to use music to facilitate and motivate learning in subjects like Portuguese language and maths. The result was quite clear since the beginning – Success!
From that moment on, she became interested in joining arts and education. When she decided to apply to the Girl Move Academy, she already knew that she wanted to do something bigger related to this area. She also knew that she wanted to improve her skills as a woman-leader and as a problem “unblocker”. She applied and she was accepted!
During the 8 months period of the Change program, Patrícia went through an intense and diversified learning process, with several areas linked to social entrepreneurship, leadership, development of different skills like trust, resilience, team work, among others…
In September of 2019, Patrícia arrives in Lisbon for her international internship and, against all odds and also defying her flexibility capacity and her unpredictable spirit, she starts her internship at VDA.
What does a teacher/drummer/singer do in a law society?
Lots of things!
She puts an end to prejudice, she stirs up routines, she defies people’s capacities to be flexible and creative, and much more!
Patrícia underwent her internship at the Institutional Relationships department and also at Fundação Vieira de Almeida. The fact that she was involved in organising some events for VDA and for Fundação awakened her to the need to invest in marketing and in the organizational side of it, something that she hadn’t given importance during her career as a musical artist. She became aware that she couldn’t put these things aside.
Also during her internship experience at VDA, she visited Brand Key, Call To Action and Academia de Santa Cecília (music school). During the Music International Day she gave a small drums concert to children at Museu da Música, she met part of the team that belongs to Jazz Agosto from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and she participated in some rehearsals at Conservatório de Artes de Loures, where she gathered lots of inspiration and ideas for her Educação pela Arte project that she wants to develop in Mozambique.
The photos below are from a concert that Patrícia organized and also participated in at VDA. This moment was the living proof that it’s worth to take chances as far as improbabilities are concerned, and that with the right partners and the right attitude, the learning journey is always much more interesting and surprising. For everyone!
