#SUSTAINABLE ENERGY
Promote sustainable energetic solutions boosting the value chain of the Mozambican/African agricultural sector.
HOW?
Test a refrigeration solution with a sustainable business model, improving the production process and profitability of Mozambican farmers.
In this challenge, Girl MOVERS will conceptualize a cooling solution for the preservation of fresh products using renewable energies, to reinforce the farming chains of value and fight waste.

CHALLENGE UPDATES
KICK-OFF
1, 2, 3 IGNITE!
In April, Girl MOVERS had their first Changemaker LAB session and started the kickoff. In a meeting in our academy in Nampula, they got to know the 7 challenges for 2021, the work teams, and the facilitators, tutors and partners they can count on during the process. The urgency on providing answers to the current community challenges was reinforced, and for an effective change, the key is local talent. Given the starting point, the first learning was Design Thinking focused on the human being and its process: empathize ; define; ideate; prototype and test. After getting to know the results of Changemaker LAB 2020 and watching the experiences shared by Girl MOVERS Alumni, it’s 1, 2, 3 IGNITE ! Our Girl MOVERS are ready to go and more motivated than ever.
THE PROBLEM TREE
PROBLEM ANALYSIS
The Problem Tree Analysis was the tool chosen by our Girl MOVERS to structure their challenge. Here, they built a shared comprehension of the challenge questions, purpose, action and goal. This was the perfect baseline to define the team’s next steps.
FIRST VISIT TO THE FIELD
INTERVIEWS
The team of Girl MOVERS mapped the area where the target communities are settled to understand the main distribution routes, estimate the quantity of lost products and calculate the dimension of the cooling infrastructure.
TRAINING CATÓLICA UNIVERSITY
KICK-OFF
To kick off Changemaker LAB, several training sessions were offered by CATÓLICA University of Portugal about Social Innovation and Sustainable Development. Girl MOVERS learned about the foundations of Social Innovation, the Global Agenda for Grassroots Changemakers, Societal Problem Analysis and Systemic Change.
MWE & RUBEN MORGADO
CONTEXT OF RENEWABLE ENERGIES IN MOZAMBIQUE WITH MWE AND RUBEN MORGADO
The renewable energies are the key for a sustainable energy transition.
With the support of MWE, Girl MOVERS understood the context of renewable energies in Mozambique, to become able to identify the best energy sources to leverage a refrigerating solution for agricultural products, optimizing the usage of renewable energy sources.
GALP
RENEWABLE ENERGIES WITH GALP
To answer the SDG 7 metrics, companies all around the world have been betting on renewable energies.
Our portner Galp is no exception, and joined our Girl MOVERS to share the main trends of renewable energies application in the world.
BRAINSTORMING
BRAINSTORMING FOR THE TECHNICAL SOLUTION FOR THE REFRIGERATION HUB WITH RUBEN MORGADO
The solar energy was the source of renewable energy elected by Girl MOVERS for this challenge. Girl MOVERS studied the components regarding the Dimension of the Refrigeration Hub, the characteristics of the solar panels and the area where the Hub will be placed. So that the best solution can be designed to answer the challenges of the community.
TRAINING LISBON DIGITAL SCHOOL
TRAINING BUSINESS MODEL CANVAS WITH LISBON DIGITAL SCHOOL
Lisbon Digital School’s trainer Glauco Madeira shared with the Girl MOVERS the concept of the Business Model Canvas with a practical exercise of the construction of their challenge model.
TRAINING UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA
DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR IMPACT WITH THE CATÓLICA UNIVERSITY OF PORTUGAL
CATÓLICA University of Portugal offered 3 training sessions for solution s definition to make the Girl MOVER’s challenges even more impactful.
Training Sessions: Innovative Business Models, Impact Assessment and Entrepreneurial Marketing.
SECOND VISIT TO THE FIELD
RIBÁUE DISTRICT
Girl MOVERS from the Challenge 1 went to visit the farmers community of Ribáue again to discuss the solution for the challenge, to understand their necessity, involving them on the design of the technical and operational solution best adjusted to the community.
DESIGN THINKING
DESIGN THINKING SESSION WITH GALP
The innovation team at Galp worked a creative session of Design Thinking, where Girl MOVERS designed alternatives to the Refrigeration Hub, evaluating the operability of this solution for farmers and agrodealers, and designed the business model that will complement the preservation of the agricultural products.
